Maritime safety is likely to be more important than ever as our climate changes, since weather will be far less predictable, far more destructive and far more changeable across the globe. The fact that the world is heating up is not news to anyone, and the earth has warmed and cooled numerous times since its formation, drifting in and out of ice ages and heading into other periods that are far warmer.
This is not debatable, but it is not the fact that the earth is getting warmer that is the real problem (although if it increases above a certain point, it very much will be). Instead, the major problem with current climate change is the speed at which it is happening. Previously, such global warming would occur over a period of thousands of years as opposed to just a century or two. In turn, this time, we will be less able to adapt to these changes and alter our culture and processes accordingly.
As such, the right safety training courses will be more important than ever to ensure that individuals are prepared for the ever-changing conditions they are likely to face out at sea. The more highly trained your personnel are, the more likely they are to effectively adapt to changing weather patterns and new safety concerns that may be thrown up as a result of the more extreme weather patterns experienced throughout the world.
Therefore, relying on old training will also not be enough, and it will be wise to send even the most experienced of workers on refresher courses from time to time so that they have the most up to date information available to them.
