Nerd Parent Revolution!

Calling all nerd parents of the world! The ongoing debate about apps for children has come to a seeming halt. Surely you’ve heard parents insisting video games rot the brain. Well it’s finally and definitely been agreed that actually apps help children learn more. That’s right, children’s apps help kids of all ages learn better! Of course it depends on the learning apps, but in general, children’s educational apps are an excellent and totally unique learning tool to be grateful for.

Apps for children are a safe way to introduce technology to kids at any age. There are tons of amazing learning apps for toddlers on the market that increase dexterity, comprehension skills, and even fine motor skills. Apps for children show kids that technology is fun and nothing to be afraid of… a very important message for those geeky, tech obsessed parents like us.

To find some of the best apps for children try search on Parents’ Choice Awards for rating and reviews of a ton of different children’s educational apps for kids of all ages.

So now that we’ve got that out of the way, do we still have to worry about too much screen time?

Well yes, too much of a good thing is still too much… or like I always tell my kids, ‘you can even overdose on broccoli!’. Like any responsible parent, it’s important to not just monitor how often a child is playing, but what apps they’re playing. A balance of being outside and screen time is important for health (duh!). And checking to make sure your children’s apps are age appropriate and safe is worth regular monitoring. Ask about which games your kids are playing and join in every once in awhile. Kid’s love being beat at their own game by their witty parents, right?

Apart from these few precautions, encourage your children to play with technology, be it children’s apps, coding, or other science projects. Even for the less nerdy family, technology is an essential part of all our lives and an important part of the future. And the younger age we get kids excited, having fun, and comfortable with technological tools, the gleefully geekier they’ll be.
